Commercial Ice Machine Training for Technicians

The only manufacturer-agnostic online commercial ice machine training for cuber, flaker, and nugget machines — refrigeration, electrical, water systems, and health compliance, with a recognized certificate.

Ice machines require regular preventive maintenance and run complex harvest-and-freeze cycles, yet most HVAC technicians avoid them for one reason: no one trained them. That gap creates high demand — and a profitable, low-competition niche — for technicians who can confidently service cubers, flakers, and nugget machines across every manufacturer.

This self-directed program, led by certified instructors, takes you from parts and controls through installation and maintenance. You’ll earn a recognized certificate and gain the skills to service any ice machine, any brand.

Why students choose this commercial ice machine training:

  • Online and self-paced — no travel, available 24×7
  • Manufacturer-independent curriculum
  • Recognized in 12 countries, with an EU textbook and program version
  • Certified instructors (many are Master Certified HVACR Educators)
  • Optional industry certification add-on

Taught by Scott Oakley, founder of eTech HVACR Training Center, a Certified Master HVACR Educator (CMHE, NATE) with 50+ years in the field.

Completly free 3-level HVAC course included with any core program.

One agnostic program covers cubers, flakers, and nugget ice across all brands — for a fraction of a single factory class.

▲ THE PROBLEM

Mold, slime, and backed-up drains are the violations health inspectors cite most — and you were never taught the fix.

✓ THE FIX

Master cleaning, sanitizing, and water treatment so your machines stay out of violation and your customers stay open.

▲ THE PROBLEM

You’re losing calls because you can’t confidently take ice machine work.

✓ THE FIX

Add a high-demand, low-competition skill and a recognized certificate that lets you say yes to more jobs.

“Anyone who repairs appliances, this is a must-have book”

Verified Purchase: Paperback

Excellent Book for Refrigeration Engineers! I would recommend this for Engineers not familiar with Ice Machines, but must have a Refrigeration understanding and ideally a F-Gas Certificate to work on the Refrigeration side.

Service Technician

It’s very, very simple to understand.

Verified Purchase: United States Paperback

75% of the book is simple but really good technical tips, the rest 25% pure knowledge, for me, is a very good combination

Frequently asked questions

Are there prerequisites?

There are no formal prerequisites, but this is not a beginner course. If your goal is repair, you should already have solid refrigeration and electrical troubleshooting fundamentals — the kind factory training assumes. This program fills the ice-machine-specific gaps factory training leaves out.

Why is the training online instead of hands-on?

No single facility can replicate the hundreds of models in the field, so hands-on training tied to one or two machines won’t prepare you for the machine on your next call. We teach the universal principles that apply across every brand and model.

Do I need EPA 608 certification to enroll?

No — there are no prerequisites to enroll. EPA 608 is required before performing refrigerant-side work in the field, and the program clearly flags which tasks require it versus what falls within non-certified maintenance.

What types of ice machines does it cover?

All major types — cubers, flakers, and nugget machines — and it’s manufacturer-independent, so the principles apply across Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic, and others.

How is an ice machine different from a standard refrigeration system?

It uses a vapor-compression cycle but is operationally robotic, running automated freeze and harvest cycles via controls unique to the industry — harvest valves, harvest pressure regulators, flooded condensers, and liquid valves you won’t meet in standard refrigeration work.

What does a health inspector look for?

Inspectors treat ice machines as food-production equipment. The most cited issues are mold and slime in the bin, backed-up drains, infrequent cleaning, and improper chemical handling — almost always a training gap, not equipment failure. The program covers cleaning, sanitizing, water treatment, and inspection compliance.

What is the Virtual Service Manager?

A post-completion support service connecting graduates with experienced field technicians for real-world troubleshooting — 10 days with the standalone program, 30 days with the Combined program.

Can my employer pay for the training?

Yes. We work with contractors, service companies, food-service operators, and educational institutions. Employer-sponsored enrollment is straightforward, and volume or institutional quotes are available on request — with no travel or lost field time since it’s fully online.

How long does it take, and how do I earn the certificate?

It’s self-paced, so duration varies. You earn the certificate with a passing grade of 80% or higher on the final exam.
