Yes. You can complete the academic and technical foundation of HVAC entirely online, then apply it on real equipment with an employer. The classroom half of this trade — electrical theory, the refrigeration cycle, controls, sequence of operation, diagnostics — transfers perfectly well to self-paced online study.

The catch is that not all online HVAC schools are equal. What online HVAC training actually teaches you

Good online HVAC training is manufacturer-agnostic. It teaches the universal principles — electrical, refrigeration, airflow, controls — that hold true across all brands, rather than one factory’s procedures.

This matters more than most new technicians realize. Factory service schools are short courses that assume you already know the core. They don’t teach electrical, water filtration, or refrigeration fundamentals from scratch — they build on them.

The other is a school with beautiful new equipment you’re only allowed to look at — no disassembly. A note on requirements: new hires and apprentices typically need OSHA training and EPA 608 certification to work in the trade. Check with your employer before investing in OSHA and EPA training so you meet their standards rather than duplicating them.

A completion certificate shows you finished the coursework. A certification (NATE, HVAC Excellence) is an independent validation of your knowledge. Either one lowers the biggest barrier to entry: an employer’s worry about how much they’ll have to train you, and how many mistakes you’ll make while they do.

New apprentices with zero technical knowledge are a real risk to employers — they pay you while they train and assess you, not knowing yet whether you’ll work out. Show up with the core skills already learned (and ideally a certificate or certification in hand) and several of those barriers fall. Common Issues with Fountain and Bar Guns and How to Fix Them

  1. The first fix is to check the primary power connection and ensure it is secure. If the connection is loose or faulty, this can cause the machine to malfunction. Additionally, check for any clogs or debris in the lines, as this can disrupt the proper operation.
  2. Another common issue is worn-out seals on the gun itself. A worn seal can cause a leak and should be replaced immediately. Additionally, check and replace the valve gaskets and O-rings for any signs of wear or damage causing a leak.
  3. If the machine is not dispensing water properly, inspect the connected lines to ensure no air pockets and that all connections are secure and in place. If the lines are clogged, try cleaning them with a soft brush.
  4. The number one problem is a lack of routine maintenance of cleaning and sanitizing the components that could result in blockage, odors, or bad taste.
  5. Is there syrup in the water supply lines? If not, check for empty syrup containers or plugged connectors.

A lack of fizz in the drink?

 

6. Are the drinks flat (without fizz)? This condition is called a “flat drink” for obvious reasons.

    1. Check for an empty CO2 tank. If the tank is full, is the carbonator pump running?
    2. Many systems use a cold plate that chills the water before entering the carbonator pump to increase the retention of injected CO2. Check that the cold plate is covered in ice and that no melted water is backing up into the storage bin. The ice machine might be a little too complex for most. Either condition decreases the quality of the finished beverage.
    3. Speaking of complexity, a carbonator pump is a type of pump that injects carbon dioxide gas into liquids to create carbonated drinks, a process called carbonation. It forces CO2 molecules to be injected and turns the liquid into a fizzy beverage. Carbonator pumps are commonly used in commercial applications such as soda fountains, homebrewing systems, and commercial brewing operations. If the pump is run dry, it will fail due to overheating and lacking lubrication from the water flowing through it. Imagine your car engine running without oil; it isn’t good!
    4. If you’re up to it and the ice machine is not producing ice, refer to THIS article for further guidance.

7. Check the pressure on the filtration system to be sure water is moving through the system. Are the water filters expired? If not, has the water filter been changed timely? If not, change it (just to be sure) so that the pressure is not restricted. Remember that water filters are a life and limited component.

8. Further, check for non-carbonated water (aka plain water) flow by dispensing water from the bar gun or fountain system. If no water flow is noted, then further suspect water flow restrictions.
