Let’s explore the opportunity first. Refrigeration techs provide services for low, medium and high-temperature commercial refrigeration systems found just about anywhere that food is sold, manufactured, or stored. Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning technicians maintain essential climate control functions, which vary between residential, commercial, industrial, and specialty industry-specific systems. Combined, the technician is called an HVAC/R technician.

Let’s discuss the commercial ice machine. The ice machine is robotic in nature compared to any other HVAC/R system. Because refrigeration technicians spend the bulk of their day working with equipment other than ice machines, it makes sense that their technical skills wouldn’t keep up with changing designs, sequences of operation, or ice shapes. Additional knowledge is needed by the ice machine specialists in machine selection and health department requirements. Refrigeration technicians could quickly jump directly into manufacturer schools or hands-on training. Many technicians have had specific HVAC School training, but few have experienced refrigeration school. If anything, there might have been some high-level coverage of ancient ice machines without their original parts. In some cases, the parts used for training are the wrong parts for the ice machine. These disparities create a problem because the technician cannot prepare for maintenance and troubleshooting since the training machines won’t prepare them for fieldwork on intact equipment.

Why would HVAC/R technicians explore specialty training with commercial ice machines and ice makers? Specialty equipment frequently consists of ground-based activities and does not need long ladders to access remote equipment or work in scorching environments. Due to age and physical limitations, priorities change as we move from our 20s into our 30s and beyond. Expanding career options that change as they grow older helps ensure their activities align with their physical abilities.

  • The factory service schools. The training sessions are more than just the hot dog, hamburger, and screwdriver show at the local supply house through the factory. Multiple machines are in place and ready to tinker through various procedures such as control troubleshooting, adjustments, cleaning, sanitizing, and much more. If your initial training when you started in refrigeration was minimal (many/most started this way), prerequisite skills and knowledge is needed. We’ve just spent considerable time sifting through help wanted ads on the interest for the pay scale for technicians at varying points in their careers. Sadly, commercial airline pilots, doctors, and Attorneys all earn far below their career potential when they are first starting. At the start of their careers and with incredibly high student loans to pay off, it is easy to become disenchanted with things. HVAC/R technicians and other technical trades are often started at wages that discourage starting in their industry.

We noticed that the starting wage was equal to some fast-food starting wages in some country areas. It is crucial to remember that HVAC/R technicians and other tradespeople regularly begin their jobs with little to no training, so the problems of low pay worsen. Many starting wages are insufficient to rent an apartment and be otherwise self-sufficient.

  • Dedicate the first year or two of your career to learning on the job in a manner that advances your worth to your employer and your customers.
  • Leverage your new skills with certifications (not necessarily certificates) such as NATE and ESCO. The certifications clearly differentiate you and those who only ‘claim’ they know.   • Don’t job hop. Allow your employer to catch up and pay you commensurate with your value proposition. Hint: If you train and become certified with Building Automation and work for an employer that doesn’t do that work, your certification won’t receive much recognition.
  • Discuss your training plans with your employer in advance. Remember to be clear that you are not job-hopping and want to “help the business.”
  • Remember that knowledge takes a back seat if customers don’t like you! Hygiene and communication skills matter.
  • Commission pay is often far more lucrative than hourly wages. For example, in the HVAC/R trade, encountering outdated and badly abused equipment is expected. Technicians are the employee that finds the lousy equipment, and the first inclination is to fix it. The problem with this approach is that the ‘fix’ is usually a band-aid that results in dissatisfied customers, costly callback, and online (extortion) complaints. The latter is the well-known consumer process of filing complaints about lousy service, bad repairs, and demanding their money back or new equipment for free. Many employers offer commissions (in addition to hourly wages) for new equipment sales because the tech is best positioned to start that conversation from an ‘expert’ point of view. The difference is that the company honestly earns $2,000-10,000 from the same job versus a few hundred for repairing outdated equipment. Look into this opportunity because the reward is substantial. Many technicians balk at making ‘sales’ because they are not ‘salespersons.’ If you can change that mindset into the ‘expert adviser,’ this process is simple. The technician is already doing the expert adviser role every time a repair is quoted.
